Pharmaceuticals Industry and the False Claims Act
If you are planning on entering the healthcare field working with pharmaceuticals, you should be familiar with the false claims act. The government regulates the pharmaceutical industry to protect the taxpayers' money from fraudulent uses.
Many years ago, the government passed the false claims act to encourage the justice department to prosecute claims of fraud dealing with the government. Together with the TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program), the false claims act provides a way for a person or group to press charges against a company, or person that has filed false information with the government. People that file claims are given a reward, from 15 to 30% of what was recovered, based on several factors to encourage people to help the government stop fraud. One factor is whether the Department of justice prosecutes the case or the person is left to continue the lawsuit on behalf of the government.
The majority of people that file such suits are those with inside knowledge of the company and what kind of illegal activity the company performed. Though in some cases companies have released defective products and outsiders have researched the company and filed suits. Because most of the people that file suits under the false claims act are former employees. Some companies are careful who they hire. Most companies also keep certain information from the general employees so that it can't be leaked to the public or rival companies. That's why it's important to have a good history and references. For those seeking pharmaceutical careers it is important to keep company secrets, unless there is illegal activity. If you know the company you work for is doing something illegal it is your responsibility to report it, if you do not, then you may be held liable as well.
Sometimes people lose their jobs and careers when a company is closed for fraud. Then they either find new pharmaceutical jobs or look for employment in another field. Because of this, it's important for people with pharmaceutical careers to understand what they can and can't do, as well as what companies are allowed to do and what they aren't. They should also be aware of the consequences of fraudulent activities. People seeking pharmacy technician jobs, or any career in the pharmaceutical industry, should research any company they are considering applying to. This includes finding out if the company has been charged with fraudulent activities, as well as articles related to the company and their business practices. Past infractions may indicate future, or well hidden, fraudulent activity by a company.

I know two men who worked in New York City, each of whom made millions of dollars and immediately quit their jobs, taking up completely different careers as gas station owners in New Jersey.
