A retail pharmacy professional maintains and improves people’s health by providing advice and information and supplying prescription medicines. A retail pharmacy professional also sells over-the-counter medical products and instructs clients on the use of medicines and medical appliances. A retail pharmacy professional also offers special health check services, such as blood pressure monitoring and diabetes screening. A retail pharmacy professional keeps a register of controlled drugs for legal and stock control purposes. A retail pharmacy professional confers with doctors about prescriptions and advises patients of any adverse side effects or potential interactions with other medicines/treatments. A retail pharmacy professional keeps up to date with current pharmacy practices and new drugs and their uses. A retail pharmacy professional maintains computerized records and also manages, supervises, and trains pharmacy support staff.

A retail pharmacy position requires a BS degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field with two to three years of experience in a retail pharmacy environment. A retail pharmacy professional should be able to work in multiple functions including all the processes of order review and product dispensing. A retail pharmacy professional should also have the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
