US eye-care company Alcon Incorporated announced plans to expand its operation in Cork, Ireland, creating 186 new jobs.
Michael Martin, the
Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced the further investment of over €21.14 million into the operation as he officially opened the completed first phase for Alcon’s Cork branch.
Alcon is the world’s largest ophthalmic company, producing pharmaceuticals, surgical equipment, contact lens care, and other treatments for eye diseases. In 2007 the company posted sales of $5.6 billion and profits of $1.5 billion in 2007.
Alcon brought its operation to Cork in 2000 and has already invested nearly €15.6 million in expansions. Its Cork branch currently employs around 200 workers involved in the
manufacture of surgical intraocular lenses.
