Pharmaceutical company Roche announced plans to move its New Jersey headquarters across the continent, all the way to San Francisco, California. As a result, 374 workers at the current Nutley manufacturing facility are questioning the future of their jobs as the building will shut down.
However, from tragedy to triumph, Roche said it will grow its research and development operations in the east coast. James Hughs, Dean of Rutgers University’s Edward Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, says that Roche’s relocation decision is driven primarily by its plan to take full control of Genentech. Roche already owns 56% of it and sees its research as the future of the company.
