Job Summary:
 
Under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer, the Laboratory Director is responsible for planning, directing, organizing and leading all services provided by the Laboratory. The Director oversees both inpatient and outpatient laboratory services, management of all staff, establishment of policies and procedures, directs performance and improvement activities, directs outreach growth activities and participates in Mercy leadership meetings. The Director ensures that all laboratory services are in accordance with established policies and procedures, maintaining the highest degree of quality patient care and customer service at all times.
 
Essential Functions:


Oversees timely, accurate, and precise performance of laboratory services. Reviews department performance in relation to established goals, implementing changes to affect continual improvement in services provided and maintaining compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.

Oversees formulation, review and revision of operational and technical policies and procedures. Ensures that all laboratory procedures are in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures as well as governmental and regulatory agency standards and guidelines.

Responsible for the selection, training/orientation, competency and ongoing performance appraisals of staff. Provides coaching and development opportunities for staff to reach their potential. Counsels and provides progressive discipline when needed.

Identifies and implements opportunities to build employee morale and individual motivation.

Actively visible serving as a resource to the laboratory team.

Oversees sound fiscal management of the laboratory, including fiscal budget formulation, monitoring, labor productivity and cost containment.

Responsible for compliance with The Joint Commission and CAP in the scope of the Laboratory. Coordinates and organizes material and personnel requirements for CAP surveys and accreditation.

Responsible for laboratory customer satisfaction for physicians, patients and other Mercy departments. Assesses customer satisfaction and implements plan to improve and reevaluates as necessary.

Oversees administration of laboratory Quality Improvement program, including technical quality control, continuing education, new employee training, instrument maintenance and quality of services review.

Responsible for contract negotiations for laboratory services.

Responsible for the development of new programs and marketing of laboratory services.

Oversees the laboratory outreach program.

Responsible for Mercy laboratory data connectivity with physician Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
 
 ','!*!License/Certification:


Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or American Medical Technologist (AMT) required.
Experience:

Minimum five (5) years of continuous full time employment in a clinical laboratory as a Medical Technologist in a management/supervisory capacity.
Current knowledge of the principles, procedures, and instrumentation associated with clinical laboratory testing required.
Strong record of holding self and others accountable for both clinical and team outcomes required.
Must be able to facilitate trust and team building among physicians and laboratory staff.
Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, required.
Must have strong customer service skills and be comfortable working in a highly productive environment.
Must be innovative and possess the ability to evaluate and present new approaches and ideas to advance laboratory services.
Education:
