Description
The purpose of this training program is to prepare pharmacists for entry into clinical pharmacy positions. This is accomplished by: Practicing in multidisciplinary patient care settings in internal medicine and related subspecialties. Receiving formal instruction and mentoring in didactic and experiential teaching methods. Assisting in precepting Doctor of Pharmacy students in clinical clerkships. Enhancing verbal and written communication skills through clinical practice activities, didactic teaching, and seminar presentations. Receiving formal instruction in department policies and procedures. Mentoring in pharmacy administration. Staffing within the department. Residents participate in 6-9 months of required clinical rotations in adult internal medicine. In addition, each resident selects 3-4 elective rotations from a broad range of available specialty experiences. Internal medicine, Cardiology, General Surgery, Infectious disease, Ambulatory care, Critical care, Nephrology, Oncology, Other areas of interest are available throughout the St. Louis area and may be explored at the resident's request. During required rotations, residents spend an appropriate amount of time under direct faculty preceptorship and the remainder of the time on their own service and assisting in precepting students. The residency preceptor meets regularly with the resident to provide advice and feedback, share clinical expertise, guide student precepting activities, and ensure back-up clinical coverage. Residents may be appointed to the St. Louis College of Pharmacy faculty and enroll in a formal teaching workshop series, conducted during the fall semester exclusively for residents. In addition, each resident may lead small group case discussions in a pharmacotherapy course, delivering a didactic lecture to pharmacy students, and completing a resident seminar presentation. In addition, the resident will complete a residency project suitable for publication. Extensive library services, computer resources, slidemaking/audiovisual support, travel funds and full benefits are provided. Attendance at local, regional and national professional meetings is encouraged. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values. Principle Accountabilities: % Of Time Spent
 
1. Works with medical residents and other physicians to optimize pharmacotherapy regimens by participation in daily patient rounds. Effectively demonstrates clinical ability using written and verbal communication skills. 25%
 
2. Provision of pharmaceutical care in multiple environments with an emphasis on Internal Medicine and its subspecialties. 15%
 
3. Education of others 10%
 
4. Exhibit a sense of self-monitoring & self-development and display a commitment to the profession/professional maturity 10%
 
5. Manage own practice 15%
 
6. Performs other duties as assigned and duties pertaining to the residency handbook, including staffing responsibilities. 25% Total = 100%
Education
Graduate of an accredited College of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree
Experience
Must obtain a License as a Registered Pharmacist by the Missouri Board of Pharmacy within 90 days of hire date
