Polymer Chemist Jobs
A polymer chemist develops polymers so that they can be used to make ingredients for products with unique physical and chemical properties. A polymer chemist is concerned with the study and synthesis of large, complex molecules. A polymer chemist manipulates the molecular structure of a material by chemical processing or through other processing conditions to develop functional characteristics in an end product. A polymer chemist carries out analyses of polymer surfaces and coatings; studies of surface chemistries, bond structures, and adhesion strengths; and the optimization of vacuum coating chemistries in order to develop new coated products. A polymer chemist is responsible for material characteristics including flow ability, scratch resistance, hardness/indentation, blooming, compound formulation, staining, blistering, and vulcanization. A polymer chemist is focused on new product development, testing methods, maximizing cost efficiencies for different raw materials, addressing quality issues in the process, and analyzing defects as they relate to formulation. A polymer chemist works with multiple plants to troubleshoot rubber and vinyl products.
A polymer chemist position requires a bachelor’s degree in polymer chemistry or materials chemistry and at least four years of work experience in a similar role. A polymer chemist must have experience working in a rubber or vinyl manufacturing environment. A polymer chemist should have excellent problem solving and creative abilities. Good communication skills, both verbal and written, are also required.
