Food Chemist Jobs

A food chemist conducts research and analyses concerning the chemistry of foods and beverages in order to develop and improve those foods and beverages. A food chemist investigates the chemical, microbiological, physical, and sensory nature of food, applying his or her knowledge in the development, processing, preserving, packaging, distribution, and storing of foodstuffs. A food chemist experiments with natural and synthetic materials to develop new foods, additives, preservatives, anti-adulteration agents, and related products. A food chemist studies the effects of various methods of processing, preservation, and packaging on the composition and properties -- such as color, texture, aroma, taste, shelf life, and nutritive content -- of food products. A food chemist tests food and beverage samples to ensure compliance with food laws and standards of quality and purity. A food chemist studies the properties of proteins, starches, fats, and carbohydrates to determine how each type of substance works in a food system.

A food chemist job requires a bachelor’s degree in food technology. A food chemist should have at least three years of experience in an accredited food chemistry laboratory performing nutritional and quality testing on meat and dairy products. A good odor memory is also very helpful. A food chemist likewise needs to be patient and persistent, as it can take months of trials to produce a new product or improve an existing one.
