Environmental Chemist Jobs

An environmental chemist investigates the sources, control, and effects of chemicals in the natural and engineered environment and is responsible for environmental protection and industry regulations. An environmental chemist follows standardized procedures in conducting routine chemical, biological, and physical testing and analyses of potable and wastewater samples and industrial wastes. An environmental chemist prepares standard chemical solutions, reagents, stains, and media filters, and distills and initiates other chemical processes in order to perform tests. An environmental chemist collects samples, sets up testing, performs analytical lab tests, records data, analyzes results, and interprets results. An environmental chemist operates automated equipment and standard applications software to maintain records and to interpret and analyze data. An environmental chemist performs research and conducts experiments in laboratories and offices on computers, testing and predicting possible environmental problems and generating solutions. An environmental chemist evaluates each project to find the most cost-effective solutions to problems while still maintaining recognized scientific methods and government standards.
An environmental chemist job requires a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a related subject. A postgraduate degree in environmental chemistry is recommended. An environmental chemist should be able to implement quality assurance and quality control processes assessing the value, quality, and significance of projects. An environmental chemist should have the written and verbal communication skills needed to carry out technical communication and scientific writing.
