A pharmacist is a state licensed job and you must make sure that you either have a license for the state in which the job is located or be able to quickly get one in order to begin work. Many places will offer you a pharmacist position hinging on your getting the necessary licensure. A clinical pharmacist will work within a hospital setting and is responsible for formulating, identifying, and providing many different types of medications. They may be dealing with prescription and controlled substances for a number of different areas including oncology, pediatrics, and cardiology. There are one and two-year resident pharmacist training programs available and clinical pharmacist candidates will have this experience completed in addition to having a degree in pharmacy. In some cases one or more years of pharmacy experience involving critical care or emergency room settings can be substituted for the residency training program.

Clinical pharmacists are required to accurately prepare different prescribed medications for many types of patients and conditions. Compound drugs must be prepared by only licensed pharmacists. They are also called upon to answer questions about drugs including interactions and possible side effects. They are charged with correctly translating, verifying and filling many different orders for medicines within the hospital setting. There is very little one-on-one work with actual patients. Although the prescriptions are written by physicians, it is imperative that a clinical pharmacist have the knowledge to question incorrect or ambiguous medicines or dosages. Another duty is to notify the doctor of any interaction or allergy that is noted on the patient history form that is in the pharmacy data banks. Clinical pharmacists can expect salaries that start at about $45,000 dollars annually.

Pharmacists who look for retail jobs do much more patient education and they interact frequently with the public. Retail or management experience is also preferred but it is not required.

There are also jobs that you may qualify for that are in the research field with some of the large drug manufacturers. The East Coast has many pharmaceutical job openings particularly in NJ and NC. Many of these jobs will hire job candidates without experience if they have excellent academic credentials including a master’s or a doctorate in their chosen field.
